A two-person studio or a big Zürich agency

September 2026, by Toby Ubajaka

Most Swiss businesses looking for help with social end up choosing between a small studio and a proper agency, and the pitch from both sides is unhelpful. Here is the honest version, including the situations where the big agency is the right answer and we would tell you to go there.

They are not the same product

A two-person studio sells you the two people. You meet them, they turn up, they film, they edit, they write, they post. What you see in the pitch is what arrives on the day.

A twenty-person agency sells you a system. Strategy sits with one person, filming with another, editing with a third, media buying with a fourth, and an account manager holds the thread. You are buying capacity and process rather than a particular pair of hands.

Both are legitimate. The mistake is comparing them on price, because you are comparing two different things that happen to produce a video at the end.

Where the big agency is genuinely better

You need four languages at once. German, French, Italian and English across a national campaign needs native writers in each, and a small studio either subcontracts that or does it badly.

You are spending serious money on ads. Past roughly a five-figure monthly media budget you want someone whose whole job is media buying, watching it daily, with a team behind them when a platform changes its rules overnight.

You need volume that does not depend on two people being well. Fifty assets a month, multiple markets, a product launch calendar. Two people cannot absorb that, and if one gets ill you feel it immediately.

You need procurement to approve it. Larger organisations often require insurance levels, contract terms and supplier vetting that a small studio cannot satisfy on paper, whatever the quality of the work.

If two or more of those describe you, stop reading and go to a Zürich agency. We would tell you the same on a call.

Where the small studio is genuinely better

The person who pitched you is the person who arrives. In agencies this is frequently not true, and the gap between the new business team and the delivery team is the single most common complaint we hear from businesses leaving one.

Fewer people means fewer handovers. A brief that passes through four people loses something at every step. When the person filming also writes the caption, the caption matches what actually happened that morning.

Decisions happen in a message rather than a meeting. Small studios can change direction the same week. Agencies usually cannot, because the change has to be costed and scheduled.

You are a meaningful client. At a small studio you are one of a handful. At a large one, a Swiss SME sits below the accounts that pay for the office, and attention follows the money. That is not cynicism, it is arithmetic.

What actually differs, side by side

Who turns up. Studio: the founders. Agency: usually a videographer you have not met, with the senior people at the pitch and the review.

Your time per month. Studio: roughly a filming day and one round of notes. Agency: that plus status meetings, because the process needs feeding.

Turnaround. Studio: the edit often lands the same week. Agency: a queue, because your job sits behind others.

Range. Studio: deep in a few things. Agency: broad, with specialists for the things a studio has to say no to.

Resilience. Studio: two people, so illness and holidays are felt. Agency: someone covers.

Price. Studio: lower, mostly because there is no office, no account layer and no new business team to fund. Agency: higher, and part of what you are buying with it is the resilience and the range above.

The questions that actually separate them

Ask both the same things and the differences appear on their own.

Who will be at the shoot, by name, and will they be there in month six. An agency that cannot answer is telling you the account will be handed down.

What happens when I need something changed on a Tuesday. Listen for whether the answer involves a process or a person.

How many other clients does the person on my account carry. There is a number at which attention stops being possible, and both kinds of business have one.

Show me a month of a real feed rather than a showreel. This separates studios that make lovely one-offs from studios that can sustain a month, which is the actual job.

The middle option nobody mentions

Plenty of Swiss businesses run a small studio for the ongoing feed and bring in a larger agency for the once-a-year campaign. The studio keeps the channel alive at a cost that makes sense weekly, and the agency handles the launch where scale actually matters.

If you already work with an agency and the monthly content is the part that keeps slipping, that split is usually cheaper than moving everything.

Where we sit in this

Cuesta Studios is two people in Lucerne, Toby Ubajaka and Yanira Cuesta, working across Zürich, Zug, Basel and Bern. We are the small studio in the comparison above, with everything that means in both directions.

We keep the list short because the model stops working otherwise. If what you need is four languages, a large media budget and fifty assets a month, we will say so on the call rather than take the work and struggle.

Common questions

Is a small studio cheaper than an agency?

Usually, mostly because there is no office, no account management layer and no new business team to fund. The gap narrows once you compare on output per month rather than on the monthly fee.

Can a two-person studio handle a national campaign?

For a single language and a defined scope, often yes. For four languages simultaneously with a large media budget behind it, an agency with specialists is the better answer.

What happens if someone at a small studio is ill?

The work moves. That is the honest trade for having the founders on every job, and it is worth asking any small studio how they handle it before you sign.

Do agencies put junior people on smaller accounts?

Frequently, and it is not dishonest, it is how the economics work. The question to ask is who is on your account by name and whether they will still be there in six months.

Can I use both?

Yes, and many Swiss businesses do. A small studio for the weekly feed and an agency for the annual campaign is a common and sensible split.
